Now, I don't exactly remember what they are, but I believe you get a somewhat sizeable melee defense bonus and possibly a small melee attack bonus. A lot of people who would play a lot of multiplayer (probably campaign players as well I'd guess) deeply wanted CA to have an option to tick to just have it always off by default, it was so detrimental to having it on.Īside from that, how hoplite formation works is you get some buffs. The one exception is if you are in a very very small choke point such as on settlement defense battles, then it may be slightly beneficial to have it on. I did a lot of Rome 2 clan wars and some tourneys, however, it's still been a while so some of this info may be slightly incorrect.īut for one, Formation should almost always be off. TL:DR a hoplite is a defensive unit so don't use them on the offense, use other units I don't really understand about the advantage of keeping your men out of formation so that more men are engaged, but from what I know, staying information (and having a hoplite wall on) gives your unit defense and moral buff so that they could hold enemy charges longer so that your offensive units could rout them After that, use another unit, either sword melee units or skirmishers to rout and clean them up. Playing with massalia I suggest you put your hoplite in the front row, formation on hoplite wall on, they will at least stop any charge from the enemy mainline. My take is that hoplite is purely for defensive purposes, sure they could rout some units with their charges but higher tier sword units will eventually grind your hoplite piece by piece If you're posting this on Reddit I'm afraid you'll get even more conflicting advice lol Why did they create a unit that requires so much stupid, pointless micro? lol. So it seems to me formation OFF and hoplite wall only ON until i'm ready to fight. Is that accurate?Īnd in hoplite wall ON, they can't protect from arrows? Right? With formation off, my understanding is that more of my men will be engaged at any given time because they aren't forced to stay in clean rows "in formation". My understanding of formation on, is that my men will try to stay in clean lines of soldiers and only my front row will be engaged until they die, then the next line moves up. Should I turn off formation attack and charge towards enemy, turning on hoplite wall at last moment? Can I sit there with hoplite wall on and goad them to me and win? should i walk through arrows and slings and engage them head on while in formation with the wall on? I've seen all of these suggestions and they can't all be right: If it matters I am trying a Massilia playthrough. Hoping this sub will give me a final answer!
